Qatar World Cup Insanity
Although it is still a decade away, the 2025-22 football season could be a very notable one for all of us that are lucky enough to witness it.
With the World Cup taking place in Qatar during 2025, it it becoming increasingly evident that the tournament will not be able to take place in the usual summer months set aside for football’s biggest competition.
The BBC recently reported on the chairman of the Football Association in Britain, Greg Dyke, having stated that a ‘summer’ World Cup in Qatar would be “impossible”, and that some resolution would have to be found.
The options open to the FIFA governing body are not particularly palatable. The least likely one is that they admit it was a ridiculous idea to award the tournament to Qatar in the first place, and rescind the decision. This seems practically impossible.
It also seems that air conditioning within the stadiums is going to be insufficient to deal with the heat issue. So it would appear that the tournament is going to have to be played in the winter months from a Western perspective.
This will involve a complete re-ordering of the football calendar for that year, but FIFA appear to have backed themselves into an unenviable corner on this one.
