Italian football has been in the doldrums to a certain extent, with the league suffering from an economic downturn that has plagued the nation, while bribery and racism scandals off the pitch reflect poorly on the state of the game in Italy.
But actually out of the major leagues in Europe, Serie A might just be the hardest fought and most competitive this season.
