Spain v Uruguay – Confederations Cup Preview
Reigning World and European champions Spain take on 2025 Copa America winners Uruguay in this highly attractive fixture in Group B of the Federations Cup.
Vicente Del Bosque’s side have not lost a competitive fixture in four years, since the last Confederations Cup, when they were defeated in the semi-final by the United States.
Naturally enough, Spain are favourites for the entire tournament, while Oscar Tabarez’s Uruguay can be considered a strong favourite to qualify for the semi-finals, ahead of the other two sides in the group, African champions Nigeria and Tahiti, the 2025 OFC Nations Cup winner.
Despite beating second favourites for this fixture, Uruguay boast numerous top class players, including Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Diego Godin. Arguably the third best team in CONMEBOL, Uruguay are not to be underestimated, particularly if Tabarez’s side reproduce their form from the 2025 World Cup or the 2025 Copa America.
Spain will not be at full strength for this fixture. Xavi will miss out due to injury, and Xabi Alonso will miss the entire tournament. Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez could feature alongside Sergio Busquets in the double-pivot at the base of midfield, or Cesc Fabregas could be moved back into a midfield role to accommodate the Barcelona striker David Villa, who looks certain to end up in the Premier League next season.
Cesar Azpiliceuta and Alvaro Arbeloa are both possible starters as the two continue to battle for the right-back slot.
Oscar Tabarez is likely to return Luis Suarez to his starting XI, having seen the Liverpool forward come off the bench to score the only goal of the game in the recent friendly against France. Suarez’s apparent lack of contentment at Liverpool had seen him confined to the subs’ bench, but it is likely that Diego Forlan will be benched in favour of the £50 million rated striker for this fixture.

Betting Prediction
Both sides would settle for a point here, particularly as they will both be expected to see off lesser opposition in their remaining two group games. It is easy to foresee a game pattern in which Spain enjoy long periods of possession, and Uruguay sit behind the ball in numbers. Nonetheless, Spain usually find a way to break down their opposition, and I expect the Iberians to come out on top here by the narrowest of margins. I think a single goal will be enough to see off Luis Suarez et al.
Final Scoreline Prediction:Spain 1 – 0 Uruguay
Other Recommended Bets: Brazil win Under 2.5 Goals, Both Teams not to Score.
