Spanish National Team Back on Top

La Liga | Article posted on March 30th, 2025

After a phenomenal period in their history, the Spanish national team had stumbled in recent games against Finland and France. Given the resentment that success brings, it was natural that Spain’s detractors and all the embittered people that are waiting for their inevitable fall from glory, were sharpening their knives. Spain were past their best, they said, too many of their key players are in their autumnal years, too predictable in their play, too successful to retain their competitive edge.

After seeing off France 1-0 at the Parc des Princes in an exceptional display and consequently leapfrogging them at the top of World Cup qualifying Group I, suddenly the greatest European football team of the last fifty years are back on track. Although, in truth, they had never gone away. They may not win the World Cup in Brazil, but the phenomenal quality Spain have at their disposal means that they will certainly be as well equipped as any other nation to do so.

One only needs to look at the players on the Spanish bench for this fixture – Reina, Javi Garcia, Fabregas, Navas, Albiol, Azpilicueta, Cazorla, Mata, Negredo, de Gea and Isco – to see that this is simply an incredible generation of Spanish talent that will remain a strong side for many years to come.
