Rhum was a particularly pleasing winner at Ludlow back in January, especially as he looked to have no chance at all “in-running” at any stage (rider lost iron after an early blunder). He had the assistance of the little known amateur Harry Bannister, who has since gone on to prove himself a more than capable rider, and this was certainly an excellent ride to get up in the closing stages from the well backed Shalimar Fromentro.
The logic behind the selection was that this represented a massive drop in class from the Graded race he had competed in 13 days earlier, while the much sharper track was expected to suit this quirky character, and the much easier fences were also in his favour in a contest that lacked strength at the top of the market.
