Time to Break up Barca?

La Liga | Article posted on April 24th, 2025

Although I predicted a win for Bayern Munich over Barcelona, no-one could have predicted that the German side would wipe the floor with the Catalans. Particularly as the talismanic Lionel Messi was returning to the Barcelona team.

In the event, despite two very dubious goals, Bayern Munich were full value for their 4-0 victory. Not only were they better than Barca, they completely outplayed them. Barcelona failed to cope with them physically, and gave away some very simple goals, while offering almost no attacking threat themselves.

Every team reaches its sell-by date sooner or later. No-one expected this to happen so soon to Barcelona, but the problem that they particularly faced against Bayern, in my opinion, was a complete lack of hunger. Bayern were quicker to every loose ball, they pressed it harder when not in possession, they just looked as if they wanted it more. Which is not surprising, seeing as they’ve never tasted the sort of success that Barcelona have before, whereas Barca fielded numerous players who are already among the most decorated at club and international level in football history.

This Barcelona team is far from finished, but they certainly need some fresh blood and to jettison some of the dead wood before they can find their mojo again.
