Transfer Window: Crystal Palace win the January war
“Ince excelled in the Championship over the past 18 months, delivering 24 goals and 19 assists.”
Michael Lintorn runs through his five favourite January Premier League deals, holding high hopes for Tom Ince…
5 – Antonio Nocerino (AC Milan to West Ham, loan)As over three-quarters of the window passed with West Ham only able to recruit an unwanted League One centre back, it seemed unthinkable that they would end the month with a recent Italy international. Nocerino’s game-time at AC Milan fell in the past year, but the Rossoneri struggled without the hard-working midfielder, who scored 11 times in his first San Siro season. Despite dwelling 18th, West Ham are a hefty 3.711/4 to tumble into the Championship.
4 – Wilfried Zaha (Man United to Cardiff, loan)Zaha would have been as popular as Tom Ince if he was on the loan market 12 months ago, but six months of doing nothing at Man United gave Cardiff almost a clear run at an England-capped player integral to Crystal Palace’s promotion last term. The winger gave an instant taste of what he can do by emerging from the bench to help halt Cardiff’s four-match league losing streak against Norwich; they are subsequently out to 2.526/4 for relegation.
3 – Lewis Holtby (Tottenham to Fulham, loan)Overshadowed by the mega splurge on Konstantinos Mitroglou, Fulham’s feat is snaring Holtby isn’t being greeted with enough incredulity. The midfielder has Champions League experience, played 24 Premier League games in his first year at Spurs – more a victim of circumstance in a bloated midfield than a flop – and was linked with Bundesliga heavyweights Schalke and Dortmund. Any bottom-half club would have been improved by the German, let alone the 1.511/2 drop favourites.
2 – Juan Mata (Chelsea to Man United)Man United’s front four wasn’t in desperate need of maintenance with Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney supported by Adnan Januzaj and Danny Welbeck. However, signing one of the best Premier League players of recent times from a rival gives David Moyes’ reign a needed jolt of momentum. The Stoke defeat perhaps indicates that it can’t mask wider flaws, yet their positional foes didn’t capitalise, so a top-four finish remains viable at 4.1n/a.
1 – Tom Ince (Blackpool to Crystal Palace, loan)After the disastrous sign-anything-that-moves summer window, Crystal Palace nailed January. Their standout addition was Ince, who excelled in the Championship over the past 18 months, delivering 24 goals and 19 assists. A reported £1 million fee is expensive for a loan, but it will prove a bargain if survival is secured – they are currently 2.245/4 to go down. Additionally, with his contract up in June, they have a shot at a free permanent signing if all goes well.
