“It is conceivable that Cagliari defender Davide Astori and versatile Juventus wing back Kwadwo Asamoah were on David Moyes’ radar too.”

After a noisy yet remarkably unproductive summer, Man United are finally ready to grant David Moyes the authority to overhaul their squad over the next seven months, despite his awkward start.
Anderson is expected to depart this winter, with expert career rejuvenators Fiorentina favourites to secure his services, and trusted Sir Alex Ferguson lieutenants Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic are tipped to leave when their contracts expire in June.
Rio Ferdinand’s 12-year Old Trafford stay is likely to end in similar fashion. Alexander Buttner, Javier Hernandez and at least one of Nani and Ashley Young should exit too, while Ryan Giggs’ move to the coaching staff may become permanent.
The regeneration process is well underway. Adnan Januzaj is now recognised as one of the club’s standout players, and Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck are utilised far more prominently.
Extensive scouting for signings is being conducted, but Moyes has played down hopes of January arrivals. He was spotted at Cagliari v Juventus on Sunday, probably to assess bench-warming Juve midfielder Claudio Marchisio, whose introduction turned the game.
It is conceivable that Cagliari defender Davide Astori and versatile Juventus wing back Kwadwo Asamoah were on his radar too. Andrea Pirlo could also be an option, yet he surely wouldn’t need to watch him live to learn his merits.
Man United, who trail fourth-placed Liverpool by five points and are 3.211/5 for a top-four finish, are also alleged to be tracking young Rayo Vallecano midfielder Saul Niguez, who is on loan from Atletico Madrid. Underutilised Real Madrid left back Fabio Coentrao is their most obtainable January target.
As for Chelsea, who are a chunky 4.216/5 for the Premier League title after briefly skimming top spot over the weekend, there are also more reports of outgoings than incomings.
Attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne’s Wolfsburg switch is imminent, with Jose Mourinho unlikely to mourn the loss of a player in their most congested area of the pitch whose attitude he criticised.
Speculation that Juan Mata will be sold continues, with Bayern Munich the latest mooted suitors, but he is 1.351/3 to remain. A loan move for Michael Essien is more feasible, with AC Milan keen, and Demba Ba will also want out following six matches without an appearance.
Mourinho has often quelled talk of January investment. However, most suspect that a midfielder will join. Industrious Colombian Fredy Guarin is the easiest to acquire due to Inter’s willingness to do business. Former Blues youngster Nemanja Matic is the £20 million alternative.
