West Ham United v Manchester United – Match Preview and Betting Tip
Manchester United will travel to Upton Park on Wednesday evening for the sort of fixture that is only provided by English football. In East London, there is no guarantee that their eminently superior technical ability will prove decisive, as long as good old English graft and durability can still be summoned in the home side. Nonetheless, although United have had some difficult days at Upton Park in the past, most notably when they effectively lost the 2025-95 Premier League by drawing 1-1 at West Ham, they will be strongly favoured to come away with three more points as they continue their irrevocable march to a twentieth top flight title.
The Hammers have been something of a dichotomy this term, in that they have exceeded what could reasonably be expected of them given their resources, yet achieved almost exactly what most would have predicted. That is really a testimony to the gritty competitiveness that Sam Allardyce inevitably instills in his teams, and if the football has been a little too functional to appeal to the West Ham crowd, one cannot really quibble with a comfortable mid-table position in their first season back in the top flight. Though their play has been more Julian Dicks and Martin Allen than Bobby Moore and Paolo di Canio, it is worth remembering that the latter of those players featured in a West Ham side that was relegated.
Michael Carrick will give the Hammers fans a brief reminder of that gloriously wasteful period in their history during this fixture, when David James, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Paolo di Canio, Jermain Defoe and Carrick himself all pulled on the West Ham jersey, yet the team managed to get relegated out of the Premier League (albeit Lampard had left by then). Carrick has gone on to be an exemplary performer, and is arguably the Premier League’s most under-rated player. Many United fans consider him to have been the season’s standout performer, and it seems beyond question that the midfielder will pick up his fifth Premier League winners medal in a few weeks time.
United are likely to make a few changes from the team that beat Stoke 2-0 at the Britannia Stadium, as is Sir Alex Ferguson’s tendency. West Ham are far less likely to change a team that picked up a useful point at Southampton.

Betting Prediction
West Ham are a competitive team, but once United have trophies in their sight, they are rarely anything other than ruthless, last season being the exception that proves the rule. I think United will win comfortably by two goals to nil, and I also recommend the under 2.5 goals and both teams not to score bets.
Final Scoreline Prediction:West Ham United 0 – 2 Manchester United
Other Recommended Bets: Under 2.5 Goals, Both Teams not to Score, Rooney to be first goalscorer.
