Wigan Athletic have begun their latest daring escapology act with an unlikely 3-2 victory at West Brom, and go into this match at home to Swansea knowing that a win would put them in a very strong position to retain their Premier League status. The Latics have made a habit of leaving a good run of form that pulls them clear of the drop zone until the eleventh hour, and this season has been no exception, with the north west club still in the bottom three, as they have been for large parts of this season, with but three fixtures to go. Such is the concertina-like nature of the Premier League this season, though, that Wigan know three more points here will actually make them favourites to stay up.

It could yet be one of the most memorable seasons in the Latics history, with Wigan also booked in for an FA Cup final trip to Wembley to face Manchester City later this week. If they start as strong second favourites for that fixture, and remain odds on to be relegated, in must also be noted that Wigan Athletic have made it their personal business to defy the oddsmakers again and again during their residence in the Premier League.

This fixture could actually be an excellent opportunity for Wigan against a team that has not been hugely motivated in recent weeks, and are without a win in their last fixtures. Swansea are a composed footballing team when at their best, but given the fact that they have already won the first trophy in their history this season, secured European football for next season, and long since confirmed their Premier League status, it is perhaps natural that one or two of their players have started to yearn for the beach.
